Very useful for anyone using carving tools!
Sharpening Carving Tools for Beginners book by Lora S. Irish is well worth owning if you have carving tools. I’m well versed at sharpening knives but the edges of tools like gouges and v-tools not so much. In fact, I have destroyed the edges of several of said tools over the years due to my lack of knowledge. This book is just what I needed to teach me how to sharpen these tools correctly. I was even happier with this book when I found that the Author included instructions on how to correct damaged edges of tools. The book is well laid out in written instruction, photos and directional diagrams. She couldn’t have made it any easier to understand. Thank you Lora S. Irish for creating this perfect how to manual! It is worth every penny and more!

Brief but detailed
First, this is a very short book–only 30+ pages–and even the introductory section describes it as a “booklet” which is, I think, accurate. Beyond that, I was pleasantly surprised at how well laid-out and illustrated the content is. Think illustrated magazine articles as a reference. There is a section on the various types of sharpening stones and their proper maintenance, then it gets into the sharpening procedures for double-edged straight blades, gouges, V-gouges and chisels. Instructions are clear and easy to understand, including information about why the author chooses to do things a certain way, which is valuable insight. The biggest omission was of curved or concave carving knives. I have a few I rarely used simply because I’ve never been able to get a satisfactory edge on them. This book is disappointing in that it doesn’t even acknowledge such styles exist. Apart from that, this is a solid starting point for beginners looking to improve their sharpening game with straight-blade carving tools, and would likely be of equal use to beginning wood turners as well.

Basic sharpening turorial
Good basic book on sharpening. Explained some stuff on stones I did not know, and would be a good book for someone starting out in woodcarving who is frustrated by trying to get a good edge.

Photographs and new ideas
I have always had a hard time doing sharpen blades in fact I use the wiggling blades which are the sharpest of all blades and it seems that they somehow get worse but this book helps him and I keep the pages open when I’m sharpening it’s a good try and it’s probably better than a YouTube video because you picked the page you’re working on and leave it open good luck

I was quite shocked at how small this book (printed paperback version) was but, once I read it I realised that it is more than enough information. It covers different types of stone, oil or water , strops and the final polishing after stropping. After reading it I can see exactly how I was going wrong before and the author tells you that you won’t get it right straight away. It seems obvious to me now, although at first I just felt useless.Everything is covered in 48 pages (not 64 as stated) with good clear photographs and simple explanations. This is a must have book if you want to get excellent results from your sharpening and for the price of a couple of cups of coffee it is a no brainer.
