Simple to install So far, so good after 2 weeks. I like the visible blue led to know if/when its charging/working.The charger obviously does not charge 100% of the time, but once it senses a fully charged battery, it goes into a trickle mode and wakes up once the voltage drops below the threshold voltage.
Doesn’t Generate Sufficient Power This solar panel doesn’t generate sufficient power to keep my battery charged. At night when there is no sun, the battery isn’t holding enough charge to run.
Perfect for a battery Nest Cam Plugs in perfectly to a battery operated Nest Cam. Works very well to trickle charge and maintain battery. You get plenty of cable length and all that you need to install it. Easy to put together and install. You can’t beat this for $19 versus the $70 solar panel that Google recommends!
Remember that it’s only 5v, if you wanted 12v then get 3 in series. I needed 12v so I had to wire them in series. I bought two of these. They come with the cables you need to daisy chain them together to cut your charging time by half. I plugged my phone into one right out of the box and it started charging in sunlight. At just 6w, these will charge a device rather slowly, so don’t expect too much. After 2 hours in the sun I had a 10% charge. With a second panel connected I doubled the amount of charge in the same time. You can also charge two devices at once with the two-panel setup. These are great to have on hand in case the power goes out and you need to keep a phone operational. No power is stored in the panels, so these cannot power lights at night. They are lightweight and thin enough to slip into a backpack for hiking and camping. Also good for teaching kids how solar energy works. A good reminder of how much energy is going to waste. At this price, I highly recommend picking up a pair to keep with your emergency or off-grid excursion kit, overall I do recommend this item.
So far, so good… I installed the solar panel on a tree to power my nest cam, which is also mounted on the same tree. I installed my cameras in the fall, and by winter I learned that climbing a ladder to get up a tree in the snow is not fun in the least bit. The solar panels officially recommended by Google are about $60, ain’t no way I got the money for that after splurging on these security cameras, so I’m really grateful I was able to get my hands on these panels. It’s only been about three days, so it’s hard to really tell if the panel is working as hard as it should… I’ll update when I next get a notification to recharge the battery and see if this panel really did extend the battery life. For now, I can confirm that the nest cam registers the panel and shows the infinity icon on the battery page in the app. So far, so good…
Good alternative for outdoor cameras If you are using Nest cameras like us, you’d realize remembering to charge them is a hassle. Every now and then I had to take it offline, and bring it to the garage for a day, and then remember to put it back. This solar panel (and to be fair similar ones), solves it.What are the advantages for this particular one then?Pros:+ Larger panel: depending on how much Sun you get, others would at best be trickle charging+ Power indicator: first time I’m seeing this, and very useful feature
Don’t waste your time. I tested it for a month. Direct sun light and it is summer in Canada, but it still discharges faster than charging not sure why. Very minimal activities (1-2 per day!) and it is showing solar correctly on the app for my nest cam battery device.. it doesn’t work even though claiming to have higher wattage than the other products
