Great idea, not as effective in use
The concept is great, and the quality (except for the wooden paper keeper ‘rods’…more on that later) seems good overall. The strop part is far more effective than the sandpaper part. The concave curved strop is nice for curved gouges more than spoon knives (they require an even more awkward twisting motion on this than they do on a flat strop). The convex strop is only really useful for spoon knives and larger gouges, as the diameter is bigger than a lot of curved gouges.Overall its more of a solution looking for a problem. Any 1/2″ to 3/4″ dowel and a bit of leather will do everything this does just as easily. More easily actually as the angles are easier to judge and hit effectively. I kept finding that the flat portions of the paddle, and the paper keeper keys kept getting in my way when trying to use the convex strop. On mine, the paper keys were loose in the slots, which required me to fold the paper more than once on the first fold to make it stay tight. Even then I was juggling them and the paddle because they would come loose if I bumped them. All in all, with the very little benefit provided by the concave strop portion vs all of the other issues and inconveniences, it wasn’t worth the $20 for me and I’m returning it. A ceramic rod prepped with a cheap, coarse diamond stone does a better job than the sandpaper, for less…and you can put a leather sleeve over the same rod for a very effective strop. Total cost maybe $10 and it’ll work for virtually any curved carving tool you have.**Edit 6/8/23 ~Ana with BeaverCraft reached out, and offered to send me a replacement strop free of charge. I accepted and the new strop arrived today. The quality on this one is much better…putting it at 5 of 5 stars on that metric. With the better sandpaper fit (the key dowels aren’t falling out constantly) I’ve also found that the convex portion of the tool is much better for spoon carving knives if used in hand, vs running the tool over it. It’s much more comfortable to twist the strop while running it through the knife, than to try to awkwardly manipulate the knife while trying to run it over the strop. Before, I had to hold the dowels so there was no real ability to do this. These two facts allow me to raise my ratings to 5 stars. The product works as it was intended to, and BeaverCraft’s customer service is TOP notch.

Perfect for hook knives – excellent value
I thought of making this in my shop, but decided to buy it since it’s priced fairly. Works well for both sides of the bevel. Also works well on gouge. I’d buy again!

Great product but not for everyone
Great product overall for sharpening and stropping most curved tools. There are two small things that cause me to give 4 stars. First, the concave portions have a somewhat high curvature so not all tools will fit. This will always be the case of course as there’s no curvature that works for every tool, and I’m sure they’ve chosen one that works for most of their tools. Second is the orientation of the leather, it is skin side up when I’ve only use stropping compound on the suede side before. I’m sure this works alright, but it might be less effective.

not sure to get this?
Just do. I wasn’t sure if it was really worth it for my newly acquired hobby of taking larger pieces of wood and turning it into a plethora of small tiny shavings of wood. But it is.it’s great and easy to use, comes with a couple sheets of sand paper which is lovely. They made a great video demo on how to use it. what’s the worst? you have a more evenly sharpened/polished gouge than before? I’ve used it flat on a work table and put a screw through the hole in the handle to keep it in place.Could you make this in house? sure, but at what cost? If you’re honestly thinking about making something like this in your shop good luck with the leather.

Ingenious and working great for me
I’m loving this strop! I was wondering how I’d sharpen curved blades effectively, and this is the answer. I’m new to wood carving but not to wood working. So I know the importance of a sharp blade. So far Beavercraft has not disappointed me yet in the quality of their tools, and this is no exception. I almost hate saying that because I don’t want them to raise their prices. But they deserve credit where credit is due and I hope they keep up the great work. This strop is amazing. It does what it’s supposed to do and it does it well. If you have never used a strop before it does take a bit of practice, but once you get it down you wont go back to any other method of sharpening your knives. This set up is very well made. The leather is already attached and ready to go. It can also be used with sandpaper for more aggressive sharpening if you need to, and includes the paper to do it. The secret is just don’t go so long using your tools that you need to use aggressive sharpening, and don’t nick your blades ;)If you have curved blades like gouges and hook knives then give this a shot. If you take the time to learn how to use it you wont be disappointed.

Shape is somewhat limited but for the right tool it’s great
Wish the order would’ve included the advertised polishing compound, missing from my order. The idea of using very fine paper to sharpen has been known for a long time. Then to simply strop it smooth. Neither are novel ideas and this paddle does work well for a quick job to keep rounded chisels etc sharp, wish the two edges were flat, one side with paper the other with strop material. It would make this rounded paddle more versitile. Paddle is very rugged and strong and is not likely to break.

keeps my beavercraft and other brands hook knifes in good order you will need to angle some knives dependent on their curve profile.

I was so pleased with this product, it made sharpening the hook knives I have a breeze. Really easy instructions sent to my in box in video form. I was able to get all 3 of my hook knives razor sharp with little to no effort. This is a fantastic item and a must for owners of Beaver Craft hook knives. Again I have several items from Beaver Craft and I am happy with them all. The price point is way lower than some but the quality is very high. Really happy with my purchase!
